No bag?

Don’t you love it when you meet new friends that you instantly click with? That’s how I feel about Sports Basement, a small, discount, four store, Bay Area, CA, sporting goods chain, that GET’S IT. I was headed to the mountains for a week last winter and needed to replace a few well worn, or in the kid’s case, outgrown items.

After I’d paid for my 8 items, one of which was a rather cumbersome pair of snowshoes, the cashier just smiled at me and said, “Thank you for shopping at Sports Basement.” I was pleasantly stunned by the assumption that I didn’t need a bag.

“No bag?” I tested.

“I can find one if you’d like,” he replied. Brilliant! He gets it. Sports Basement gets it. Now if only we can convince major retailers, like Safeway, Target, or even Whole Foods, to do the same. Unfortunately most are more concerned with “offending” customers than making subtle changes that would have a huge impact.
